The Eritrean Syndrome- A State of Mixed Feelings

For better or worse, Eritrea has been in every East African mind since its independence. It started off as Singapore and ended up as North Korea; well, without the nuclear threat. Its military invaded Yemen beyond its neighbours and its leaders enjoy the rank of undisputed best dictators of our time.
What Eritrea is and its role depends on location and the person involved. For international community including the US and EU, Eritrea is a rogue state that fuels the war in Somalia and hinders regional stability. For the Eritreans themselves, their country [the government] is a monster from inside but pretty much ‘beloved’ once they set their foot outside the country. For Ethiopian government, Eritrea is nothing but a regional source of instability and a state that sponsors terrorism. For Abyssinians, Eritrea is an extension of Ethiopia that is ‘deeply’ tied with and must reunite. For Oromos and OLF, Eritrea is a friendly state that experiences can be learnt from, military assistant sought from, to liberate Oromiyaa. And it is not difficult to see Eritrea certainly has a regional footprint much bigger than its size.   Read more…
