The 2013-Irrecha – Oromo Thanks-Giving in Toronto

The march to the river for cleansing
Oromos in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area) and other cities in Ontario and other parts of Canada warmly celebrated this year’s Irrecha Holiday yesterday, August 31, 2013 in the suburb of Whitby, a typical countryside environment that closely resembled that of Oromia. The 2013 Irrecha of Toronto has also attracted some Oromos from cities like Washington D.C and New York, from across the border in USA. There were also visitors from Germany.
As usual, this year’s Irrecha celebration in Toronto included ceremonies such as dhibaayyuu or sacrifice, cleansing or cuphaa, hulluuqqoo and darraa-gubaa or firework. Irrechaa, which is often described by anthropologists as “The Channel to God”, in all its senses is equivalent of what the Westerners call and celebrate as “Thanks Giving”. Particularly the “Dhibayyuu” part of the Irrecha ceremony is the part that signifies the saying “Thank you” to God aspect of the Holiday. Oromos of all religions, ages and gender join each other in celebrating Irrecha. Some video clips on this year’s Irrecha in GTA could be watched at: http://youtu.be/s1h7SqVOiE0, http://youtu.be/Dhu4cOxYKRAhttp://youtu.be/_Q98Xw-SrDo

The Brain Bale Rebellion, Sheik Musa Bati, died at age 70

By Kadiro Elemo | September 26, 2013
Oromo nation is saddened by the news of the death of Musa Bati , Wednesday 24 September 2013 in nagell Borana , southern Oromiya . Musa Bati , who served a honorific title Sheikh oldest in Arabic - that his salad age , because of his knowledge of Arabic and Somali, was among the pioneers in Bale peasant resistance against the Ethiopian rule in the 1960s and 1970s to end the humiliating yoke tribute -giving , land dispossession and cultural suffocation . A close confidante of General Waqo Gutu , led Sheikh Musa the Oromo fighters during many fierce battles including the landmark battle Dhombir 1963. Because of the heroic activities Sheikh Musa at Ethiopian army and naftanya marching , his family paid a heavy cost. In the morning of the early 1960s , when the Ethiopian jets raided his village , his family lost their entire stock market , more than 300 cows and camels. In raids , which lasted three days , lost Oromo farmers more than 12,000 animals and countless people . At the time when the Oromo were unwanted in the administration , civil service , schools , media , justice systems of the empire, this tragedy was a major turning point in his life . This increase , according Zaytuna Bati , a niece of Sheikh Musa, the determination of Sheikh and his friends , to fight for the right of his people before they achieve victory over the invaders who despise their culture and robbed their country .
As a prolific author, who earned the name of " brain of the revolution , " Sheikh Musa was a man in charge of keeping diaries of struggle and negotiate with enemies. In the late 1960s , when he met the Emperor Hayle Sillasens to negotiate a ceasefire and a peace agreement , the emperor could hardly believe his eyes when he saw a young man in his early 20s. The skinny boy does not meet the expectation of the emperor who heard a lot about the bravery of an imaginary Sheikh. Then the emperor said , "I want to deal with Sheikh Musa, a big one , not a baby one. " A witness had come to prove to the Emperor that he works with Sheikh Musa, the real and the only one. When the confused emperor offered him a chance to go to school and a car , said Sheikh Musa him that his main requirement was to ask empire cease their abuse and violent repression of the Oromo people , who declined his offer the same opportunity extended to all Oromo children.
Aside from a brief exile in Somalia , Sheikh Musa refused to leave the country he loved most , Oromiya . He returned to the country after the fall of the military dictatorship Mangistu Hayle Marya in 1991. He took part in the transitional government of Ethiopia , the Transitional lease. He remained in Oromiya even when the EPRDF government, after crossing the rental period , led a huge clamped down on all democratic rights and brutally suppressed the Oromo people's quest for self-determination. A fearless advocate of Oromo people were Sheikh Musa of " dubbii sibilaa " ( Hard Talk) arrested for many years, and Hurso Agarfa , along a prominent Oromo activists and elders . He was released after his health deteriorated , and when Mahmud Bune , a brother of Colonel Hussein Bune , another icon of the Bale rebellion, died in a prison. Sheikh Musa was 70 and survived more than 20 children, some of them still languishing in prison houses in Ethiopia on fictitious accusations of supporting anti - peace elements. We will have good opportunities to remember the legacy of Sheikh Musa Bati during a commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the modern Oromo military struggle against the Ethiopian rule. We 'll show a video message Sheikh Musa Bati to Oromo and friends of the Oromo , 20 October 2013 , in Minnesota , during the 50th anniversary celebration, via Facebook and YouTube. Maatii Sheekh Muusaafi firoota isaaniif Rabbin obsa haa kennu .

Addis Ababa: the outgoing president's residence rent 400,000 birr per month

source: capitalethiopia.com, on 23/09/2013
he Office of the President has finally concluded a deal to rent a 400,000 birr per month residence for outgoing President Girma Woldegiorgis on Friday September 20, canceling previous plans to rent a fully furnished house from Elias Arega at 530,000 birr a month.
The current house owned by Solomon Girma, businessman and owner of Mesale Bar and Restaurant, has been selected by the government to be the residence of President Girma, who has served in the position for the past 12 years after the first president, Negaso Gidada (PhD) resigned in 2001.
In the past few months the president’s office, i.e. the Palace Administration, has been looking to rent a house for the outgoing president. Three weeks ago the office had reached an agreement with Elias Arega to rent a fully furnished house for 530,000 birr per month. Although it is not known why, the plans were changed and a new deal was concluded with Solomon Girma instead.
Solomon told Capital that the house is semi furnished, ‘as the president will probably prefer to bring some of his own stuff’.
The two-storey residence which includes a swimming pool, located on Haile Gebresilase Avenue, behind Axum Hotel, was rented to the Kenyan Embassy the previous year. Before that the owner himself was living in it for five years after construction was completed.
Currently, an elevator is being installed in the house by Dan Technocraft, a lift technology supplier and contractor, before it is transferred to the Office of the President. According to sources, the lift installation will cost 1.6 million birr.
The deal was finalized on Friday Sept. 20 at the head office of Documentation and Authentication Registration Office (DARO).
“Based on the standard of my house I could get higher offers than the president’s office’s but I am proud to rent my home to the outgoing president,” Solomon told Capital with delight.
Sources said that the owner has to turn over the house to the Office of the President, by the end of September.
As per Ethiopia’s laws, the outgoing president has the right to receive several benefits, including a presidential standard residential house, but if the former president is involved in political activities the benefits shall be terminated.
According to the country’s constitution, the president shall not be in the position for more than two terms or 12 years. The current President is the first to occupy the position for two terms since the constitution was ratified.
President Girma, whose second six-year term comes to an end next week, is renowned for his role on environmental issues.
The ‘Proclamation No. 255/2001 Administration of the President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia’ states that the government has to supply an up-to-the standard residential house and other facilities for the outgoing head of state. A September 2009 proclamation no. 653/2009 further states that the government will provide benefits for an outgoing head of state, heads of government and other top government officials.
According to the proclamation number 653/2009 under the article ‘Rights and Benefits of Outgoing Heads of State and Government, Senior Government Officials, Members of Parliament and Judges Proclamation’ an outgoing President, Prime Minister or Deputy Prime Minister shall be provided with a residential house having four-to-five bedrooms, the administrative costs of which, including remunerations of housekeeping staff, shall be covered by the government.
The proclamation also states that an outgoing President, Prime Minister or Deputy Prime Minister and his family shall get local and overseas medical services at the expense of the Government.
“An outgoing President, Prime Minister or Deputy Prime Minister shall be provided by the government with three high standard transport vehicles,” the 2009 proclamation also states.
In related news, speculation about the incoming president is rampant, even though the government or the leading party (EPRDF) has not given any hint about the identity of the incoming president.
One presumed front-runner to replace President Girma is former Caretaker Mayor of Addis Ababa and prominent diplomat Ambassador Berhane Deressa. However, it has not yet been confirmed by the government.
According to the 2001 proclamation, the president shall have no affiliation with any political parties.

Libya: Thousands of Refugees in Life-Threatening

500 refugees are now held in what was known to be a private detention centre in Alshatti located on Sahara Desert border with no adequate supply of basic necessities. HRLHA has also learnt that the very adverse weather condition at Alshatti has worsened the situation to the refugees. Even two expecting women who delivered after arriving in Alshatti and their newly born infants were not treated differently. The fact that the refugees are now held in isolation where they are not visited by international agencies like the UN High Commission for Refugees and the ICRC until this Urgent Action is documented,  as they used to when they were sheltered in Benghazi, added to the very unfriendly living condition has raised their frustrations. The refugees who were contacted by HRLHA also mention that there have been detachments and disconnections among refugees who had acquaintances and/or relationships with each other. Most of the refugees who were taken to Alshatti are originally from Ethiopia and Eritrea, HRLHA correspondents have added.
The HRLHA managed to obtain the names of the following 33 refugees:

HRLHA is highly concerned about the safety and future fates of those asylum seekers and refugees in such an isolated and disconnected socio-political environment. Therefore, HRLHA calls up on the Libyan Government, first of all to ensure the safety and well being of the refugees and asylum seekers by providing full protection against any kind of attacks from any side or angle and allow access to the new location to the representatives of regional and international UN and humanitarian agencies as well as media organizations so that they could receive all the supports they need especially to bring their refugee lives to an end.
The HRLHA also urges all national, regional and international human rights groups, donor countries and organizations to join hands in putting pressure on the Libyan   government so that it abides by the international norms, the 1951 International Convention of the refugees and asylum seekers and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights article 14 (1) “ Everyone has the right to seek and to enjoy in other countries asylum from persecution.”

Libya: Thousands of Refugees in Life-Threatening Situation

The following is a statement from the Human Rights League of the Horn of Africa (HRLHA) on the killing of an Oromo political prisoner, Eng. Tesfahun Chemeda, at the Abyssinian/Ethiopian prison of Qaallittii on Aug. 24, 2013. HRLHA is a nonpolitical organization (with the UN Economic and Social Council – (ECOSOC) Consultative Status), which attempts to challenge abuses of human rights of the people of various nations and nationalities in the Horn of Africa.

The Human Rights League of the Horn of Africa (HRLHA) has learnt through its correspondents that hundreds of thousands of refugees in Libya, most of whom were from the Horn of African countries, such as Ethiopia and Eritrea, are in a very dangerous situation after they had been evicted from their original refugee camps in Benghazi, Libya, where they stayed for the past three years. The eviction took place following the infiltration and assault of the refugees by those who were described as workers of the Libyan Red Crescent on the 13th of September, 2013. The assault included beating and stabbings by knives. Those who broke out of the shelters to run away from the assaults were met with the Libyan armed forces, that were stationed around the camps, prior to the starting of the assault. Then, the refugees were forced out of the camp on allegations that they attempted to instigate disturbances in the city, and taken to a remote area known as Alshatti.
According to HRLHA correspondents, about 500 refugees are now held in what was known to be a private detention centre in Alshatti, located on the Sahara Desert border with no adequate supply of basic necessities. HRLHA has also learnt that the very adverse weather condition at Alshatti has worsened the situation to the refugees. TPLF’S Long Term Political Objective and Its dreadful Impact For Oromos

Oromo elders have been practicing Gadaa system for well over 500 years.  Social scientists of diverse backgrounds at different times have studied the Gadaa system. Many of them have testified that it is uniquely democratic. The above three sentences partially clears that our ancestors were ruling our land democratically since long time back. Starting from 70’s we have been struggling to get back that right of we had lost under Menelik’s Empire, it was self-determination of Oromoiyyaa. Indeed, we shall get back our right for two main reasons, firstly we are capable of ruling our land, secondly it’s our natural right to posses and govern our land. The young generation has to show its super effort to secure those rights by what ever it takes. ‘’We should say enough for once again!’’ TPLF should not rule our land for the coming years in the presence of us.
The latest event of ethnic cleansing that is being  perpetrated against the Oromos in Eastern Hararge zone is a continuation of a grand design of the TPLF-led regime of Ethiopia to undercut the demographic weight of the Oromo and the territorial expanse of Oromiyyaa.  This design, one which its leaders in many occasions in such obvious boldness have spoken about, is framed to fulfill its long-term political and economic objectives.
The obvious political objective of the TPLF-led regime of Ethiopia is primarily the restraint of the Oromo political life. The regime with a minority constituent base is always scared of the Oromo population size with its potential political weight. To overcome this fear and sense of insecurity, it has been determined to maintain its political hegemony and keep Oromiya under its occupation by all what it takes. To achieve their devilish political interest they had to go through different mechanisms .One of among their methods is preying young Oromo generation who are vibrant and insuperable in political stage.  Frankly TPLF have chosen to squeeze our political knowledge superiority by using their aggressive power. As we still see they are exercising their power by carrying out worst actions like Imprisoning, torturing, killing, chasing of Oromo patriots.
With the intent of ethnic cleansing, the TPLF has directly launched a silent war on the Oromo people over the years. However, such a war meant to extinct a community of people has often been masked under the heading of “human rights violation”. In effect, what the TPLF has been and is still carrying out on the Oromo nation should be taken as a designed action of ethnic cleansing. Its actions that clearly attest to this fact are many.  Other actions of the TPLF have violated the very existence of Oromo communities during its rule. Man-made famines it help created resulted in starvation that took heavy tolls in life in many parts of Oromiya and most notably in Borena, Hararge, and  Arsi that the international media once referred to it as ‘green famines’. Its barbaric act of environmental terrorism has equally brought about destruction of ecosystems and exacted an inordinate number of human lives and loss of habitats for rare flora and fauna. Suffice to mention here two notorious cases that illustrate the TPLF’s acts of brutality on the environmental resources of Oromiya: The blazing and decimation of the forests in Bale and most recently in Iluu Abbaa Boora. The immediate impact of this act on the present generation of the affected communities is enormous. Furthermore, looking at this heinous crime of the TPLF from a larger scope, it is conceivable that such a destruction of ecosystems would have far-reaching implications on generations to come. It would undoubtedly check the population growth of the communities, a desired result that the TPLF leaders are hoping to secure.
Despite relentlessly working at its silent ethnic cleansing grand plan over the last two decades, the demographic weight of the Oromo people has still remained upsetting for the TPLF led-regime.
For the TPLF regime, pitting one ethnic group against another has served as a political survival means for so long. It would continue using this wild political card for as long as it is in power. Should all ethnic groups who have lived in harmony side by side for millenniums and shared a common political history fail to see its divide and conquer policy and rise up in unison and challenge it, the policy will continue serving its purpose. This would mean all oppressed ethnic groups will remain prey of this parasitic regime.
For at least two decades, genocidal massacres against Oromo have been framed that way in order to cover-up the deliberate effort by TPLF elites to either reduce Oromo by attrition to a minority population or to destroy them fully so that Tigireans can take over Oromia and its resources. That is their long-term plan.
With absolute military, economic and diplomatic powers, Tigirean elites have ever been emboldened to destroy the Oromo nationality and its material, cultural and intellectual properties. They are accountable to no one–not to their laws, not to international law and not to moral principles. TPLF elites’ arrogance is becoming limitless, soaring. While they engage in genocidal activities in Oromia, the international community has afforded them the complete silence they so want. However, the human and material destruction caused by Tigire elites in Oromia is equivalent crisis to Syria and Darfur. Although, we should have to get limited interference of international community to calm current genocidal deeds of TPLF. We shouldn’t wait their help, we have to strengthen our struggle as much as we can . I will conclude this short article with Martin Luther king saying   ‘’freedom is never voluntarily given by oppressor, it must be demanded by oppressed ‘’.
Oromiyyaa for Oromos !!

ESAT Claims Four Ethiopian Air Force Pilots Defect and Join Ginbot 7

opposition cyber media, ESAT claimed that four Ethiopian Air Force pilots have defected and joined the Eritrean-backed opposition group, Ginbot 7.
According to ESAT, the names of the pilots are: Aklilu Mezene, Tilahun Tufa, Getu Worku and Biniyam Gizaw. However reliable sources told Awramba times that some pilots were fired due to professional incompetence and bad behavior last year and it is unknown whether these “defected pilots” are previously included in this list. Government authorities have not yet given any official explanation on the matter.
Ethiopia is the second strongest military power in Africa next to Egypt; according to the global firepower’s 2013 unique analytical display of world military data.
Listen to ESAT’s report.
